At MommiesFirst we believe in moms helping moms!

We also believe in debunking myths. So let’s wipe out Super Mom and replace her with Happy Mom! And in support of Happy Mom, we’re launching the Help Mama series, which is dedicated to introducing our community of moms to companies whose sole purpose is to ……. yes, you’ve got it – help mama.

This week, we are sharing a company called MADESQUARE ….

Mini Wood BlocksBamboo PrintsPhoto Strip Book
MADESQUARE is an app, but is MUCH more than just an app! It enables you to use photos from your phone and create them into a beautiful memory, keepsake or gift!

Can you tell us a bit about your entrepreneurial story?

LAURA: First, taking a quick step back: As the wife of a Hipstamatic Co-Founder, I was obsessed with taking thousands of square photos and when it came to printing them I didn’t really relate to anything that was out there. Come to find out my friends and soon to be co-founders Jill, Danielle, and Molli felt the same way. We had a hard time finding products we’d be excited to hang in our homes or give our family and girlfriends — so we decided to do something about it. It’s been an amazing process of brainstorming, designing, and finding the right materials for each product. The 4 of us all bring specific expertise to the table: Jill & myself with business, Danielle with design and Molli with mobile. Individually we oversee different parts of the business, and we make decisions as a team. This structure works great for us.

How do you feel you are helping moms (and Dads!) most?

JILL: Like every first time mom, I take as many photos as I can of my sweet 7 month old boy. I want to capture all of his firsts and I am lucky to be able to snap every moment, easily and effortlessly, with my iPhone. The biggest change in family photography in recent years is the absence of the physical photo. I want my son, Sullivan, to be able to discover tangible photos of his life — not find them on the internet or a hard drive. MADESQUARE is helping parents by giving them an easy way to print their photos in the same place that they are taking them — their iPhones.

What (or who) inspired you when it came to creating your business?

DANIELLE: I am lucky enough to have three awesome female co-founders — Jill, Laura, and Molli — that inspire me everyday. Our growing community is also an inspiration and helps us evolve and grow as entrepreneurs. Allowing people to have an outlet for their aspirations, and giving people permission to pursue their passion — after all, that’s what we get do to every day.
We believe in the power of change — whether that means swapping what’s on your wall, or changing your path completely. And we want to help you do it.

What are some exciting new developments for your business?

LAURA: MADESQUARE is not just about printing your photos, it’s about how they live in your home after you do so. In our blog we inspire our community with DIYs, product tips, photo styling, and shopping ideas.

DANIELLE: We’re taking this one step further later this month and next by collaborating with WellRoundedNY on some new baby-centric DIYs for their community. #OhBaby it’s going to be awesome.

The 2 biggest pieces of wisdom you’d impart to about being an entrepreneur?

MOLLI:
First –  Don’t shy away from a challenge.
Taking an idea from concept to creation to execution is a tall order, so be ready to dig in and get your hands dirty. Some of the work and challenges you plan for, and others will arise that are unforeseen. The key is to give it your all, all the time, so you can see your beautiful ideas and hard work come to life. It won’t be easy, but it will be worth it.

Second –  Remember why you started in the first place — so have some fun!
In all of the challenges you’ll face, it can be easy to forget the big picture — why you started in the first place. When you’re managing what seems to be a never-ending to do list, it can be easy to lose sight of the original fun and passion that fueled your initial idea — connect back to that as often as you can.

Some more information about the founders:

MADESQUARE founders

From Left to Right:
Laura Buick, Jill Mroz (with Baby Sullivan!), Danielle Moore, and Molli Sullivan
Our favorite part about MADESQUARE is…  being able to create for the sake of creating—everyday.

When people find out what we do, they often say: “Do you print rectangle too?” The answer is no — we are the only square-centric photo app!

In our free time, we love to … travel, create, entertain, drink bubbles, discover vintage finds, shop local, and above all else we love to photograph every moment along the way.

The last book we read were… “A Beautiful Mess: Photo Idea Book” and “Girl Boss”

We are dreaming of… a destination — where pictures and personality meet, and creativity and inspiration mingle.

We encourage you to give MADESQUARE a try!

The last trimester of pregnancy and the first 6 weeks of having a newborn could be very tiring. Getting your energy level to match up with your to-do list could be challenging.

I remember those days; dragging myself out of the bed to go to work when my very pregnant body just wanted to catch up with sleep. My baby was colicky so things did not get better fast enough after delivery.

The good thing is that things do get better as your little one grows and falls into a routine

I will be sharing 5 timeless tips for increasing your energy and getting more done that would apply well beyond the pregnancy and newborn phase.
Ways to increase your energy and get more done

  1. Get some sleep
Don’t fall into the trap of shaving off sleep time to get things done. Every once in a while is okay but slashing sleep is not a long term strategy.
  2. The sleep debt collector will hit you up for payment at the most inopportune time. The brain does not get to recharge and reboot. Your stress hormones rage. You get snappy and irritable. Being sleep deprived could make you more prone to post-partum depression.

Enlist your partner- play tag team for sleep time if you have to.

  3. Exercise
I know, I know. You are too exhausted from all the running around and too busy to make time for exercise.
How about the time you spend relaxing in front of the TV? That’s time that can go to exercise. You have to go about it in a way that works for you.

After paying gym membership dues for a whole year without stepping in there once, I bought an elliptical machine so I can work out at my convenience.
You would find me on it at 9:30PM on some nights, not optimal exercise time but hey, whatever works.

Fit4Mom (formerly known as Stroller Strides) is a wonderful program where moms can bring in their little ones in strollers to participate in exercise routines.

  4. Eat well
You are what you eat. Avoid foods that get you bloated or constipated. You are never your best when gassy. If you are nursing, those same foods would likely make your little one gassy and fussy as well.
  5. Buy back your time
You can’t get back your time and you can’t have 2 more hours in your day. The reprieve is to pay, barter or beg to have more time for what counts.
I very much doubt your kids’ care who cleans the bathroom or who schedules their dental appointment.
They do care that you show up at their recital so make time for the important events/activities and get affordable help for the non-deal breakers.
  6. Coffee
My favorite pick-me-up! Don’t overdo caffeine. 1-2 cups a day should be fine. Going above 4 cups is asking for trouble. You could start experiencing the coffee headaches, poor sleep and bladder leakage issues.

Take heart in this; the parenting days are very long but the years are incredibly short! Savor the time you have with your kids.

I would love to hear the tips and tricks you employed to “do it all”.

Ana Begins
Episode #1
The day comes when you venture to the park with your new little bundle. Excited to be out of the house you anticipate meeting other mommies at the park. Maybe you will meet a new park friend in the process.
You have chosen a nice sunny spot right next to the sandbox, where small toddlers are busy digging. Two mommies are sitting within arms-reach. You cannot quite tell if they know each other. They seem friendly enough.

Mommy #1 “I plan to breast feed my daughter for AT LEAST one year. You know, it is the best for them and I cannot understand how any mother would think to do any less”.
Mommy #2 “I tried to breast feed my son, but I didn’t make it past two months. It was painful and exhausting”.
Mommy #1 “Did you call a lactation consultant? It really is the best for them. My two other kids were breast fed until they were two and a half and they are both in the ninety-nine percentile”.
The second mommy looks somewhat put off, then quickly announces it’s almost lunchtime and exits the conversation. Not really knowing where to go, as you never produced enough milk to breast feed at all, you say “Wow. That’s great”.
Mommy #1 looks at you, “What do you do? Are you working or staying home”? Feeling cautious you keep your answer open ended, “I am spending time with my baby for now”.
Mommy #1 quickly adds, “Staying home really is best for kids. They shouldn’t be away from the mothers until they are ready to go to Kindergarten. Why have kids if you are going to pay someone else to raise them? It really doesn’t make any sense”.

Episode #2
My daughter is very friendly and loves making new friends EVERYwhere we go. On our weekly Friday hot cocoa date we sat enjoying our treats at the local coffee shop. To her excitement two little girls walked in with their mommies and sat at the table next to us. My daughter stepped over introducing herself and one of the mommies complimented her skirt. I encouraged her to say “thank you”. Next thing I know the mother asks my daughter to turn around, puts her hands on her waste, slightly twists her and checks the tag. I sat there stunned and speechless. She turns to her friend and loudly announces, “I would NEVER pay that much for my daughter’s clothing”! and laughs.

When preparing for motherhood no one ever tells you how to prepare responses for these conversations. Or are we always aware of how we may express our preferences to others.

What I have learned from these encounters are that I have probably, without truly recognizing what I was saying, have made a statement about what I feel is best without considering those around me. I cannot control what others say, but I can control how I react, and have taken that into account when discussing touchy topics. Same size does not fit all. Everyone has their own ideas and experiences on how they want to raise their kids. With the exception of child abuse I really don’t have the right or responsibility to overstep my opinion. If I want respect I need to show respect. I have made choices for my family and I should feel confident in my choices. It’s not about me. These comments have nothing to do with the receiver and everything to do with the sender. Thinking of an encouraging phrase can help dissipate negativity.

Lastly, surround yourself with mommies who naturally offer empathy and support mutually. Motherhood is challenging enough.
