Can you tell us a bit about the Loveys story?

My son’s diaper rash was awful.  I hated seeing him suffer in discomfort.

After months of trying several wipes on the baby products market, I decided to create my own solution with good quality, natural ingredients. I realized the chemicals in the wipes were irritating his skin. After experimenting with different formulas, I created a gentle solution with good, clean ingredients. I put it in a spray bottle and after using, it, his rash magically disappeared.  Other parents would ask me where I bought it because they wanted their child to avoid chemicals too or because their child had sensitive skin.  Thus, the Tushi Wash was born and the solution to my problem was the genesis of my company.

In 2011, Lovey’s came out with Canada’s only all-natural diaper ointment in a stick format.  I hated getting creams and ointments stuck under my fingernails, so I thought, “there has to be a better way”.  Thus, I decided that putting our diaper ointment in a stick made sense.  We lab tested it and inundated it with 5 strains of the nastiest bacteria and it came out clean!  It’s got enough “natural” preservative to kill the bad bacteria not only on the baby’s tushi but on the stick too!

What are some exciting new developments for Loveys?

In May 2012, we launched a new product to help with chafing and heat rash.  We had many athletes using our Tushi Stick to prevent chafing from running and they kept asking us to make a natural anti-chafing product.  ChafeGuard is a result of that request.  It works to help prevent or soothe skin from chafing due to skin to skin rubbing or fabric against skin irritation that causes chafing.  And it works on heat rash too!  ChafeGuard is used by athletes, seniors, disabled and plus sized individuals.  And pregnant moms love it too!  Used during those late months of pregnancy to soothe itchy, growing and stretching skin, it helps soothe mommies tummies!

What (or who) inspires you when it comes to juggling a busy company and career with motherhood?

My mom was a major influence.  She had to go back to work when I was 10 years old and she worked really hard.  She had 3 of us to parent and she somehow did it all.  She never gave up and she instilled that in all of us.

 Favourite mom or baby product?

I adore Mineral Fusion’s under eye concealer – truly a girls best friend (in the makeup department)!  There’s nothing worse than big dark circles under the eyes and what mother doesn’t experience that from lack of sleep?!?! It works extremely well to cover them up and make you feel human again.  I buy it at Whole Foods.

The 2 biggest pieces of wisdom you would share with moms:

#1: Ask for help if you need it.  There is no shame in asking for help.  If you don’t have someone to ask, hire someone to help.  I know funds are tight when you aren’t working but a little help when baby is young will go a long way to saving your sanity.  You cannot do it all.  A challenging time can be made easier when you have support.

#2: It’s a stage – they are all stages.  I would ask “ WHEN will the colic end?????? WHEN will he sleep through the night?” They are all stages and when one ends, the next one begins.  Some are more fun than others!  Big deep breaths – lots of them!

When they are older, I want my kid(s) to most remember me as a loving mom, who let me make mistakes and learn from them, who helped me to believe in myself and who made me feel loved for who I am.

When parents find out what I do, they often say: Wow, I know someone who could use that.  Where do you sell it?”

In my free time, I love to relax. I don’t get a lot of free time and by the time I do, I’m usually exhausted and want to put my feet up and drink a nice glass of red wine!

I’m dreaming of raising a healthy, happy, confident child; a healthy family; fulfilling work; a nice, warm, sunny beach.

Thank you, Marcie! As we post your interview, we’re dreaming of joining you on a sunny beach! In the meantime, thank you for an inspiring story!

Mom's Kisses
Can you tell us a bit about the Mom’s Kisses story?
I created Mom’s Kisses to give parents a safe alternative to ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatories for pain relief and to reduce swelling in all members of the family and to heal bruises – something every kid gets. My daughter had kidney trouble when she was a toddler & to this day can’t take OTC anti-inflammatories. Prior to her illness I didn’t know how toxic these chemicals are to our bodies & once I did know, I had to make changes. I didn’t want ANY of my family members using them unless it was urgent. I am still amazed at how readily doctors are willing to have children take ibuprofen & acetaminophen when it is not necessary, especially considering the incredibly long list of potential side-effects and contraindication these medications have.
Mom’s Kisses is not a “drug” like NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) and has no drug interactions, no side-effects and the only contraindication is if someone is allergic to daisies or lavender. In my opinion we should go to the natural alternative first when we can, and save the use of pharmaceuticals for when the pain is overwhelming the child or in cases of fever or necessity. I created Mom’s Kisses to be a fun product to attract parents and children, to give a fun, stylish option without preaching to them my philosophies. If we can make some parents aware – this will have a marked positive impact on the health of many children.
Mom's Kisses
What are some exciting new developments for Mom’s Kisses?
I think the most exciting new development is that Mom’s Kisses was asked to be in the 40th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards Gift Bags and the Talent Lounge. This was an amazing experience for Mom’s Kisses – we met hundreds of celebrities, from Lou Ferrigno, to Alex Trebeck, Jen Lilley (of GH & Days), Bethenny Frankel, Kelly Monaco (Sam on Days), Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki Newman Y&R), Thom Barry (Cold Case) and so many many more! Our product has already been in 2 national soap opera magazine articles because of it and I get to have twitter conversations with many of the wonderful celebs who are loving our products!

What (or who) inspires you when it comes to juggling a busy company and career with motherhood?
Honestly, my children are what inspires me. I love being a mom and I have always been an entrepreneur. Showing my children you can live your passion and showing them the creation of something that makes a difference in this world is what keeps me going when the going gets tough. Most of us have to work. Being able to work with them around, letting them see the creation of an idea, then a product and finally a company, having them involved in aspect of production, getting their impressions and opinions on labels, smells, marketing ideas – this all makes them more engaged on days I have to work and they feel valued and part of something bigger than their lives at school.

Any momfession?
I find running my own business can be lonely – if you are typically the personality who is the one to reach out, once you are running a business, you simply don’t have the time anymore to be the organizer. People don’t always make the same effort you would to connect and at times it can be hard when you need to get out of the office. It is really hard balancing being a good parent, wife, having the business be successful and actually having some quality friendships. There are days when it seems impossible that’s the biggest disappointment for me.

Favorite mom or baby product?
Mom product – a certain brand of red wine – LOL – no really I couldn’t live without keyless entry cars! Seriously, never having to find my keys in my big handbag has saved me so many times.
Baby product – it was this amazing diaper change pad that we still use 14 years later! It is waterproof on one side and absorbent tarten fabric on the other side and is about 2 ½ feet by 2 ½ feet. I bought one for every one of my friends and for each of my kids – they are still on beds in case of night mistakes.

The 2 biggest pieces of wisdom I’d impart to moms are:
#1 Do your best each day, but remember your best is a floating scale, different from moment to moment.
#2 You will make mistakes – don’t get wrapped up in guilt, simply use your mistakes to learn new methods of parenting, discipline, or whatever you need to do better the next time. Own up to your mistakes so the kids learn to own up to theirs.

When they are older, I want my kids to most remember me as …
A never ending source of unconditional love who was always there to educate and show them something new.

When parents find out what I do, they often say: “………”
“Wow! I didn’t know that! You created the product? You make it!?” And they want to know more.

In my free time, I love to …
Spend time at the beach with my kids, garden, entertain friends in my home.

I’m dreaming of
Taking my kids to Europe to teach them about history and culture and to learn that there is so much more to the world than our little community – perspective like that is so helpful when the little problems we face in our lives seem insurmountable. Knowing there is a whole world out there waiting for us with so much to see and do makes it easier to manage bullies, a bad test score or the crushing sadness of young love.

Preppy Personals

Can you tell us a bit about the Preppy Personals story?

“On The Day You Were Born Prints” were created and designed in 2010 after the birth of my daughter while I was a stay at home mom.  After previously working and designing invitations, stationery and announcements for over 10 years, I decided to create a keepsake about my little one’s entry into this world and frame it.  I received such a positive response from friends that I began creating these special prints as gifts for my friends’ children and it took off from there…retailing in many of my favorite preppy stores around the area, reaching the tiniest members of preppy nation around the U.S. and today THRILLED to share that we are in nurseries world-wide including: Austrailia, Canada, Europe & New Zealand!

When approached about what I make for older kids, I thought about my passion for teaching and education and created “alphabet soup” prints.  I loved the idea of using the ABC’s to help kids identify letter/sound recognition and an object that corresponds.  Matching note cards seemed like a necessity as they accompanied the alphabet soup prints perfectly and created the perfect preppy package.

Most importantly, I love the feeling of creating a customized piece of art that makes every child’s room unique and preppy!

What are some exciting new developments for Preppy?

Our exciting news is that we will soon be featured in Bump to Baby Magazine!  We are also in the      process of creating new prints of a different style and layout in honor of our newest preppy family member. We’re pregnant!

What (or who) inspires you when it comes to juggling a busy company and career with motherhood?

My mother is my inspiration for wanting to be the best mom I can be.  I feel so blessed to have her in my
life.  She is my best friend, the sister I never had and a true role model as to what a mom should be.

Favourite mom or baby product (other than your prints, of course!)?

My favorite baby product is my Uppa Vista stroller and the Gunapod sleepsack.

The 2 biggest pieces of wisdom you would share with moms:

#1: family first…everything else comes second and can wait

#2:you can’t ever tell a child enough how special they are & how much they are loved.ds, the next one begins.  Some are more fun than others!  Big deep breaths – lots of them!

beansprout image Can you tell us a bit about the Bean Sprout story?

In 1995 I opened bean sprout in Toronto as a resale store for children’s clothing. It specialized in higher end labels and I was extremely particular with the quality and condition of the clothes so it soon became a leader in the resale industry. To meet the growing needs of my clientele and to offer an extensive selection of brands I began selling only new items at bean sprout in 2006. After 16 wonderful years, I closed the bricks and mortar store and launched as an on-line shop in 2012. Bean sprout was voted the best kid’s clothing store in Toronto was featured on The Mom Show and was ranked by Toronto Life Magazine as one of Toronto’s top 200 stores. I’m proud to continue to offer exciting brands and exemplary customer service through

What are some exciting new developments for Bean Sprout?

We are continuing to develop the website to include exciting services such as personal shopping, exclusive offers for our subscribers and shipping options such as Pick-up. Exciting brands this spring include Berlingot, Zutano, Claesen’s and Me Too. We support local fundraising initiatives by offering donations upon request, and are always seeking styles from independent Canadian designers to be featured on

Any momfession you can share with our moms? I have one child, a 24 year old son, so I must confess that I get my “girly” fix when I purchase pretty girl clothes for the store. My suppliers get a giggle out me as my adrenaline actually rises when I find that stunning dress!

What’s the newest baby fashion trend? Watch for colourful prints and pretty dresses for girls. Leggings continue to be a great addition to any dress, tunic or top. Fun graphics on tees and bright long shorts are hot this spring for boys.

Any items you recommend for moms (and their babies) this winter? I find dressing children in fun, colourful clothing brightens up our long winters. It simply makes everyone feel better. Me Too and Zutano are known for bright, colourful, fun clothing.

The 2 biggest pieces of wisdom you would share with moms:

#1:Try not to say “no” right away to your child. If you say, “I’ll think about it” or “I’ll let you know in a minute” it gives you the time to really think about the request. Most importantly you don’t look like you’re going back on your word or “giving in” if you say no and then yes.

#2: As your children grow into their teen years, keep the dialog open, even when they say they don’t want to talk about stuff…I believe they do. Show unconditional love during these years.
