Can you tell us a bit about the Help! We’ve Got Kids story?

Help was started in 1994 primarily as a print directory. It was designed as a place to go that has everything you need for your child so you aren’t searching around a million places. The website launched in 2000 and has quickly become a go-to for every parent in Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary and Vancouver.

What are some exciting new developments for Help! We’ve Got Kids?

We just hired an Editor and are now doing fantastic newsletters and articles with experts on our site that are driven by questions we get from parents every day.  We also launched our site in Ottawa a few months ago, which is very exciting.  And we continue to grow and develop our website based on feedback from parents and advertisers.

What (or who) inspires you when it comes to juggling a busy company and career with motherhood?

I find it very difficult to find role models  who juggle work and family well and I feel as though true balance is a myth and every day is about choice. I’m inspired to show my children that it is important to have a strong work ethic and that time together as a family is also really important. I hope they can take away a few lessons from having a working mom.

Can you tell us a bit about the Dapple story?

When we first became moms, we were frustrated to find a lack of products that were not only safe for our kids, but also actually cleaned the messes they made. The fact is that babies make a unique kind of mess – the first one we were confronted with was the milk residue and odor that just wouldn’t rinse off our bottles and breast pumps. Traditional dish soap couldn’t do the trick, and also left behind a synthetic fragrance and soapy suds. Even green cleaners just weren’t made for the kinds of messes we were dealing with.

So we created Dapple Baby Bottle & Dish Liquid, working with leading pediatricians and green chemists to find just the right ingredients that are 100% natural, and also 100% effective in getting our bottles clean – really clean. As our families have grown (we now each have 4 children), so have our messes – so we’ve continued to expand the line with new products, each designed to zero in on a specific type of mess – from sticky fingerprints on high chairs and toys to spitup and mashed up peas on onesies, and more – in a safe and natural way. All of our products are baby-safe, natural-based, biodegradable, and not tested on animals. They’re completely free of parabens, phthalates, SLES, SLS, dyes and synthetic fragrances. Many of our most popular products are also available 100% fragrance-free.

What are some exciting new developments for Dapple?

We’re hard at work in the Dapple labs, coming up with new ideas to clean up your baby’s messes – so you can expect some great new products coming out this year. Most recently, we launched our Dapple Essentials Kit, a handy box filled with our most convenient, travel-sized products – perfect for any trip and diaper bag.

What (or who) inspires you when it comes to juggling a busy company and career with motherhood?

We come from a family of businesswomen, dating back to our grandmothers, so we’ve seen first hand how beautifully they’ve balanced family and career. They continue to inspire us, as do our own families – we would not be successful without the incredible support of our husbands, and of course it’s all worth it to be able to spend quality time with our children!

 Any momfessions?

Dana confesses: Little white lies to my pediatrician. “Oh no! My three year old no longer uses his pacifier. No way. We got rid of that a long time ago.”

Tamar:  Okay, so I put my one year old to sleep with a bottle. Anyone know a good dentist?

 Favorite mom or baby product?

We love Sage Spoonful Feeding System. It’s so fun to make home-cooked meals for our babies. But boy- are they tough critics already!

The 2 biggest pieces of wisdom you would share with moms:

#1 Roll with the punches

#2 Stock up on play dough. There is no tantrum that can’t be overcome by some orange play dough

Please fill in the blanks.

When they are older, I want my kid(s) to most remember me as…

Tamar said: Their best friend and mentor.

Dana said: Their confidant and the person who always has their backs.

When parents find out what I do, they often say:

Tamar said: How do you balance the business and your family?

Dana said: Almost every parent I meet has an idea in them. A product, a concept, … something that would make their lives as parents better or easier. When they meet me and hear about dapple all these ideas come bubbling out. I love it!

In my free time, I love to…

Tamar said: walk with my baby, take the kids to the park, prepare delicious homemade meals

Dana said: read, build fantastical sculptures with my kids, explore the city with my husband – we love NYC

 I’m dreaming of

Tamar said: A peaceful, clean world!

Dana said: More babies and more time to read – TOTALLY mutually exclusive

We are so honored Tamar and Dana took a “time out” from managing busy households, lots of little people and a thriving business to share their story! Tamar and Dana, we LOVE Dapple and wish you great success. And yes, I must personally confess to being VERY jealous that you both somehow find the time to read and make home cooked meals!

Can you tell us a bit about the EcoParent story?
Hmmm…there’s so much to tell, it’s hard to know where to start! We’re a family run magazine, and the idea really started brewing when we had our son. We had always tried to be basically responsible in terms of lifestyle, but had never been obsessive about it…until the pregnancy. I spent A LOT of time online, (obsessively) trying to figure out how to ‘do better’ as a parent, and discovered that the resources available for parents were very scattered, and it was difficult to know who to trust, as so much of the information out there on the internet doesn’t really cite its sources (I have a PhD, so I’m essentially trained as a professional researcher, and I don’t trust anything if I don’t know where it’s coming from, or what it’s based on!). AND then there’s the fact that things change so rapidly (new scientific studies, brands reformulating their ingredient lists, etc.) that even a great resource from a year ago may not be up to snuff today. So, out of all that work, an idea was born: an ongoing information hub for parents that want to be informed, and want a source they can trust.

What are some exciting new developments for EcoParent?
Well, we’re planning a website relaunch soon, so that we can start building an online resource that will complement our print magazine. We’re also currently working with the Green Living Show, Canada’s largest consumer focused green event, to create an attraction called “EcoParent Village,” which will have vendors, a workshop stage, a breastfeeding area, a baby change station, etc. We’re very excited about both of these developments, as they’ll allow us to reach out more effectively to Canadian parents, and help them to make better, greener, safer choices for their families.

What (or who) inspires you when it comes to juggling a busy company and career with fatherhood?
My son is my biggest inspiration. His endless joy is what gets me up in the morning (and keeps me working after he goes to bed!!!). And the feedback we’ve been getting. Based on what’s coming back at us, it’s clear that people are obviously craving the information that we’re providing, so that’s a big inspiration too. It’s nice to feel like you’re doing some real good in the world!

 Any dadfession?

We’re not perfect. Can you believe it?!? Sometimes we take shortcuts when we’re out of time (or patience, or organizational brainpower, or whatever). For instance, we use a disposable diaper here and there (though we try to ensure that we have a ‘green’ brand around) instead of ALWAYS using our cloth diapers (often because we’ve run out, because this dad didn’t have a chance to launder them, because he was too busy playing at being a magazine publisher!).

Favorite mom, dad or baby product? (other than EcoParent magazine, of course)
That is SOOOO hard. We have a favourite in every category of product! But I guess my personal favourites would have to be our baby carriers. We just recently retired our Little Ds stretchy wrap (which I LOVED), and I’m still very much in love with our Onya Soft-Structured Carrier (SSC). I LOVE WEARING MY SON LIKE A BACKPACK! As a dad, it gives me a bond with him that would be tough to achieve in any other way. And he loves it. We get out for nature walks every chance we get (giving mom a chance to get some work done), and we both love it!

The 2 biggest pieces of wisdom you would share with moms:
#1: Don’t get sucked into the mindset that there’s no time to change things up. The beauty of changing for the better is that it can be accomplished in a thousand tiny acts, over the course of years. In fact, that’s almost always the way it happens. There’s only so much time in a day, after all!

#2 Give up on perfection. When you discover that you’ve been squirting butylparaben into your infant’s mouth for months (check out the ingredient list on that vial of infant Tylenol!), know that it can only get better, and that there’s always a better option…you just have to find it (there are brands of paraben free infant acetaminophen out there)! Children are incredibly resilient, and they’ll bounce back from pretty much anything. So out with the guilt and dismay at every shocking discovery, and in with the desire to make things better!

Please fill in the blanks.

When they are older, I want my kid(s) to most remember me as someone who bothered to listen to them, and to others.

When parents find out what I do, they often say:  “Wow!”

In my free time, I love to SLEEP!

I’m dreaming of growing the magazine enough to hire a staff!

Thank you, Sam!  MommiesFirst is honored to have a company like EcoParent Magazine as a brand partner.  Your mission and values inspire us!  You are truly making a difference!

Can you tell us a bit about the pediped story?

When I had my first daughter Caroline, I wanted shoes for her that would let her feet develop as naturally as possible while still looking stylish.  There was nothing on the market that fit my needs so I had some prototype made for her and she would get tons of compliments on them.  On a whim, I went into a baby store in Santa Monica and asked if they would ever be interested in selling them and they said “Yes”.  That gave me the confidence to start the business.

What are some exciting new developments for pediped?

We just launched our Spring Summer 2013 collection and it is our largest and most exciting yet.  We have tons of bright colors and really interesting materials.  We improved the sole on our originals line to give it more traction and parents just love it.  We also just launched a women’s line, called Brian James that brings the same core values of style and comfort to the women’s market.

What (or who) inspires you when it comes to juggling a busy company and career with motherhood?

My desire to spend time with my children is always my inspiration. When I was in a corporate environment all three of my children were in daycare for nearly 10 hours per day. Weekends felt short and too packed with errands to spend the quality time with them that I desired. Juggling for me means staying focused and doing as much work as possible while they are at pre-school and after bedtime. Working hard at those times means I can spend true quality time with them each and every day.

 Favorite baby product?

My girls are 9 and 7 now, but we have a few new moms in the office who absolutely love clothes from Kickypants and Ergo baby carriers.

The 2 biggest pieces of wisdom you would share with moms:

#1: Listen to your instincts as a mother.

#2: Model for your children an adulthood worth striving for; show them how taking risks and working really hard is a path to having a meaningful and fulfilling career and life.

Please fill in the blanks.

When they are older, I want my kid(s) to most remember me as…a loving mom and a good business woman.

When parents find out what I do, they often say: “My child would love to be a pediped model!”

In my free time, I love to…travel with my husband and daughters.

I’m dreaming of …my new line, Brian James really resonating with women.  I really wanted to give women shoes that look amazing and are super comfortable.

Angela, we KNOW Brian James is going to be a huge hit. I’ve loved pediped shoes since my first baby was born and I took him for his first shoe shopping adventure (a high for me, a low for my husband). I will never forget him being seated in a little couch, getting “sized” for the right show, and my son running around with glee with his new shoes.  Precious moments and amazing shoes.  Thank you!

Can you tell us a bit about the Where Parents Talk story?

Our company was started when each of us realized that there were no quality visual resources for new and expectant parents available.  That was in 2000 when web video did not exist and DVDs were just becoming popular.  As new and young moms ourselves, we decided to put our thirst for parenting knowledge alongside our professional background as television journalists to produce how-to parenting DVDs, focused on sharing simple nuggets of information in small digestible morsels to support parents with the many challenges and joys of parenthood.

What are some exciting new developments for Where Parents Talk?

Our portfolio continues to grow, just like our kids! In addition to our how-to parenting DVDs and website, we have a parenting TV show, a monthly column in ParentsCanada magazine and are working on a national parenting radio program.

What (or who) inspires you when it comes to juggling a busy company and career with motherhood?

Passion is a fabulous source of inspiration. The desire to share smart, time and energy-saving parenting information is a wonderful driver.  In the years since we have been running our business, the need for quality parenting information has increased by leaps and bounds. Technology has played a large part in that equation, so too has the appetite for information that parents today have.  We are also driven by a deep desire to help people.  If we figure something out as parents, we are only too happy and willing ot share it.  The beauty of this business is that as we learn new things with our own children and families, we are able to impart some of those key learnings via our parenting network.

 Any momfession?

I can be a drill sergeant at times.  It is not a role I enjoy but it does serve a purpose, when necessary.

 Favourite mom or baby product?

Anything from Creativity for Kids.  My kids have always enjoyed the pencil crayons that turn into watercolour paint just by adding water. They turn anything into artistic masterpieces and feed the imagination.

The 2 biggest pieces of wisdom you would share with moms:

#1: Trust your instincts, they are more than often right.

#2: Do not do for your kids what they can do for themselves.

Please fill in the blanks.

When they are older, I want my kid(s) to most remember me as a mom who was/is so very proud of her kids and always helped them reach their potential.

When parents find out what I do, they often say:  “that sounds fascinating’, followed quickly by ‘how do you do it?’ and finally, ‘you must be crazy!”

In my free time I love to travel, take photographs and daydream.

I’m dreaming of my kids being happy and fulfilled in whatever they do, and always knowing how much their parents love them.

Thank you, Lianne!  On a more personal note, Lianne and Where Parents Talk were among our first brand partners, has been incredibly supportive of MommiesFirst and has a genuine heart when it comes to making amazing products for families.  We couldn’t be prouder to have partnered with such a wonderful company and amazing entrepreneur.

With love and care,
