Can you tell us a bit about the Rocky Mountain Soap Company story?

We bought the company when it was just a tiny 300sq/ft store and kitchen and had no idea at the time of what it would become. We felt that it was so important for parents and people in general to be able to buy toxin-free body care products and we learned there is a big need for a brand that people can trust. There is little to no regulation on the chemical ingredients that companies are allowed to use, and just a little education. Our dream is to rid the Canadian bath & body industry of toxins for good.

What are some exciting new developments for Rocky Mountain Soap Company?

We are so excited to have finally launched our sunscreen line, its tough to do sunscreen naturally and we feel like this formula is outstanding. We don’t like to give to many product launch secrets away up front but I will say that we are working on some exciting new soap scents as well as transitioning our line towards being organic. We have an exciting line up of new products we’re working on formulating but we’ll keep a lid on those until they get closer to launch. We also have our long-terms sights set on more store locations across the country.

What (or who) inspires you when it comes to juggling a busy company and career with motherhood?

My EO (Entrepreneurs organization) forum group. I see all of these business owners juggling kids and companies and it takes away some of the guilt knowing others are juggling too.

Is there a momfession you can share with our community?

I became a pro at Bejewelled when I was up nursing my 3rd baby in the night. It got me excited to get up 3 times a night. That and Huffington Post App…

Favourite mom or baby product Favorite baby product? Favorite mom product?

Our Lavender hand cream…the scent just makes me relax and chill out a bit when I am busy.

The 2 biggest pieces of wisdom you would share with moms:

#1  It takes a lot to screw up your kids, so relax.

#2  Know that your kids will eat half of what you expect them to and sleep twice as much. If they are fussy, nine times out of ten they are tired.

Please fill in the blanks.

When they are older, I want my kid(s) to most remember me as…teaching them to love the earth…literally I mean dirt, plants, bugs etc

When parents find out what I do, they often say: “They say, “You look too young…”

In my free time, I love to…play guitar.

I’m dreaming of …Quitting my day job and becoming a groupie 🙂

Karina, can’t wait to hear you play a song on your guitar and welcome her to the MommiesFirst family!

Mom's Kisses
Can you tell us a bit about the Mom’s Kisses story?
I created Mom’s Kisses to give parents a safe alternative to ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatories for pain relief and to reduce swelling in all members of the family and to heal bruises – something every kid gets. My daughter had kidney trouble when she was a toddler & to this day can’t take OTC anti-inflammatories. Prior to her illness I didn’t know how toxic these chemicals are to our bodies & once I did know, I had to make changes. I didn’t want ANY of my family members using them unless it was urgent. I am still amazed at how readily doctors are willing to have children take ibuprofen & acetaminophen when it is not necessary, especially considering the incredibly long list of potential side-effects and contraindication these medications have.
Mom’s Kisses is not a “drug” like NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) and has no drug interactions, no side-effects and the only contraindication is if someone is allergic to daisies or lavender. In my opinion we should go to the natural alternative first when we can, and save the use of pharmaceuticals for when the pain is overwhelming the child or in cases of fever or necessity. I created Mom’s Kisses to be a fun product to attract parents and children, to give a fun, stylish option without preaching to them my philosophies. If we can make some parents aware – this will have a marked positive impact on the health of many children.
Mom's Kisses
What are some exciting new developments for Mom’s Kisses?
I think the most exciting new development is that Mom’s Kisses was asked to be in the 40th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards Gift Bags and the Talent Lounge. This was an amazing experience for Mom’s Kisses – we met hundreds of celebrities, from Lou Ferrigno, to Alex Trebeck, Jen Lilley (of GH & Days), Bethenny Frankel, Kelly Monaco (Sam on Days), Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki Newman Y&R), Thom Barry (Cold Case) and so many many more! Our product has already been in 2 national soap opera magazine articles because of it and I get to have twitter conversations with many of the wonderful celebs who are loving our products!

What (or who) inspires you when it comes to juggling a busy company and career with motherhood?
Honestly, my children are what inspires me. I love being a mom and I have always been an entrepreneur. Showing my children you can live your passion and showing them the creation of something that makes a difference in this world is what keeps me going when the going gets tough. Most of us have to work. Being able to work with them around, letting them see the creation of an idea, then a product and finally a company, having them involved in aspect of production, getting their impressions and opinions on labels, smells, marketing ideas – this all makes them more engaged on days I have to work and they feel valued and part of something bigger than their lives at school.

Any momfession?
I find running my own business can be lonely – if you are typically the personality who is the one to reach out, once you are running a business, you simply don’t have the time anymore to be the organizer. People don’t always make the same effort you would to connect and at times it can be hard when you need to get out of the office. It is really hard balancing being a good parent, wife, having the business be successful and actually having some quality friendships. There are days when it seems impossible that’s the biggest disappointment for me.

Favorite mom or baby product?
Mom product – a certain brand of red wine – LOL – no really I couldn’t live without keyless entry cars! Seriously, never having to find my keys in my big handbag has saved me so many times.
Baby product – it was this amazing diaper change pad that we still use 14 years later! It is waterproof on one side and absorbent tarten fabric on the other side and is about 2 ½ feet by 2 ½ feet. I bought one for every one of my friends and for each of my kids – they are still on beds in case of night mistakes.

The 2 biggest pieces of wisdom I’d impart to moms are:
#1 Do your best each day, but remember your best is a floating scale, different from moment to moment.
#2 You will make mistakes – don’t get wrapped up in guilt, simply use your mistakes to learn new methods of parenting, discipline, or whatever you need to do better the next time. Own up to your mistakes so the kids learn to own up to theirs.
Mom's Kisses
Please fill in the blanks:
When they are older, I want my kids to most remember me as …
A never ending source of unconditional love who was always there to educate and show them something new.

When parents find out what I do, they often say: “………”
“Wow! I didn’t know that! You created the product? You make it!?” And they want to know more.

In my free time, I love to …
Spend time at the beach with my kids, garden, entertain friends in my home.

I’m dreaming of
Taking my kids to Europe to teach them about history and culture and to learn that there is so much more to the world than our little community – perspective like that is so helpful when the little problems we face in our lives seem insurmountable. Knowing there is a whole world out there waiting for us with so much to see and do makes it easier to manage bullies, a bad test score or the crushing sadness of young love.

Penny Lane Organics Founders and Family
(left to right) Bo Penny holding Lorena (Ksenija’s granddaughter), Brian Penny and Ksenija Cucic (Bo’s sister and partner)

Can you tell us a bit about the Penny Lane Organics story?

We’re a small family owned and operated company located in the beautiful Beaver Valley (Ontario) on 3 acres with gardens, including Medicinal Herb garden and spring fed streams running through the property. At some point in our lives we decided to go “back to the basics” in our vegetarian and sustainable lifestyle, to grow our own food and make everything we can ourselves. That included making personal care products four our family members. Once we mastered the newly acquired knowledge and skills we decided to offer these products to others who wanted all natural vegan or vegetarian and toxin free products for themselves and their loved ones.

Our recipes and our products reflect our life choice and are based on our personal philosophy that if we wouldn’t put something IN our bodies then we won’t put it ON our bodies either. Therefore when we design our own proprietary recipes for natural personal care products we choose ingredients that are often found in the kitchen or garden.

What are some exciting new developments for Penny Lane Organics?

Bringing new products to the market is always exciting and we’re always working on new recipes. We’re also excited about the recognition our natural deodorants, our rough skin balms and our baby products have been receiving in the media. And finally – our Medicinal Herb garden is expending and providing inspiration for new recipes and new products.

What (or who) inspires you when it comes to being an entrepreneur?

Anyone that conducts their business with honesty and integrity and who cares more about the customer than about the profit. Those are the people that provide excellent customer service even when the customer might not be completely right 🙂

The 2 biggest pieces of wisdom you’d impart to about staring an eco-conscious business/being an entrepreneur?

#1 Educate yourself about all relevant regulations governing the industry you’re in so you know you’re doing everything right and in the best interest of the consumers.
#2 Honesty, integrity and an exceptional customer service is a key to success and to staying in business. If you’re a small company you can’t compete with large players in the market but if you provide excellent product and customer service and if you’re honest with your customers you will succeed.
Penny Lane Organics
Favorite part about founding Penny Lane Organics is meeting so many like-minded people; having the opportunity to educate consumers about dangers of toxins in their everyday products and seeing how many young parents are making the right decisions when choosing personal care products for their children.

When women (or moms) find out what I do, they often say: “Wow! How do you do that? And …Thank you for making such wonderful products”

In my free time, I love to… in our gardens.   My husband and I live for gardening. Any other free time is spent reading, listening to the music or doing yoga and meditating.

I’m dreaming of …world in which all people are equal, where we no longer notice the skin colour and don’t care about religious or sexual orientation. World without wars, violence, poverty and hunger. Beautiful planet Earth – our Mother that offers safe existence and sustains all living beings.

Penny Lane Organics products can be found in both our Expectant Mom and New Mom/Baby Boxes!
We are honored to have partnered with Bo and Penny Lane Organics!
